The total economic output of Guiyang city – capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province – surged to 471.1 billion yuan ($65.8 billion) last year, up from 163.4 billion yuan in 2012, with an average annual growth of 9.4 percent.

Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2012, Guiyang has made concerted efforts to raise the standard of living and the quality of life of its people, and the income levels of urban and rural residents in the city have been greatly improved.

The enhancement of economic strength has laid the foundations for the expansion of its residents' urban and rural incomes. Last year, the per capita disposable income of urban residents in Guiyang was 43,876 yuan, an increase of 22,080 yuan over 2012, with a cumulative increase of 101.3 percent.

The per capita disposable income of rural residents was 20,565 yuan, an increase of 12,077 yuan over 2012, with a cumulative increase of 142.3 percent.

From 2012 to 2021, the income gap between urban and rural residents in Guiyang was also lower than the national and provincial average levels in the same period, narrowing from 2.57 times to 2.13 times.

Moreover, income growth has stimulated consumer spending massively. In 2021, the per capita living consumption expenditure of urban residents in Guiyang was 31,347 yuan, a cumulative increase of 99.4 percent compared with 15,718 yuan in 2012.

At the same time, the per capita living consumption expenditure of rural residents was 17,261 yuan, 1.8 times more than the spending of 6,161 yuan in 2012.
