The Wudang district of Guiyang, capital city of Southwest China's Guizhou province, is leading efforts to help the city develop as a national civilized city – with Guiyang having won the honorary title of national civilized city four consecutive times.
In China, a national civilized city refers to a city that is officially recognized to have a high level of urban infrastructure and whose residents enjoy a high quality of life and 2021 is the first year of the 7th national civilized city selection cycle.
The Shenghuoqiao community is the staff member dormitory area of the old Xinguang Factory, which was built in the 1960s. Until recently, it was a typical old community with outdated and dilapidated infrastructure.
But in August 2020, Wudang invested about 12 million yuan ($1.85 million) to upgrade the community – including renovating roads, installing streetlights, building fitness squares, adding smart equipment and greening the environment.
Upgrading and transforming old communities is one of the measures being undertaken by Wudang to consolidate and upgrade itself, to help Guiyang's progress towards becoming a national civilized city.
Wudang has also actively carried out comprehensive renovation of its municipal infrastructure and improved facilities, including its main and secondary arterial roads in built-up areas.
It has also expanded the construction of standardized public toilets, introduced more bus stations and parking spaces and established fitness venues.
With a focus on a healthy public environment, the district has increased its urban sanitation and cleaning efforts to ensure the overall cleanliness of main and secondary roads and commercial streets.
In addition, Wudang has organized various forms of voluntary service activities and publicity activities, actively guiding the public in terms of civic pride and civil behavior, to improve overall social conditions in the district.
